Getting back on track 🚂 & giving thanks 🙏🏽

Let's get back on track!

In today's newsletter:

🚀 Language for getting a conversation back on track (on-topic) again!

🚀Expressing gratitude at Thanksgiving (and every day)

Don’t you hate when a conversation gets off-track?

(off track = off topic, from the idea of a train going off the tracks 🚂)

An International Cooperation client and I were recently discussing how her boss often gets off-track or sidetracked during their conversations.

She was going to have an important conversation with him soon, so we practiced some phrases and strategies to get the conversation back on track. I thought these might be helpful for you too:

If it’s a topic you plan to speak about later in the meeting, you can say:

⏺️I’m going to talk about that exact topic in just a minute.

⏺️Great question. I’ll be addressing that next.

If it’s totally off topic, acknowledge their comment or question:

⏺️Interesting. ⏺️Good point. ⏺️Thanks for that input.

And then use one of these phrases to re-focus:

⏺️ If you don’t mind, let’s get back to the slides / X topic.

⏺️ Could we hold off on that until I’m finished?

⏺️ We have time at the end for discussion, so let’s wait on that.

⏺️ I would love to talk about that after I finish with my next point / after I’m done with X.

🦃Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. 🦃

It’s not just the seasonal foods (pumpkin and pecan pie! cranberry sauce!), but also the time to reflect and give thanks.

This year, I’m full of gratitude for:

🌟My health

🌟My friends and family

🌟My clients for trusting in me

🌟My Spanish tutor here in Bogota

🌟My skills and knowledge that I can share with others

Gratitude benefits us because it puts our life in perspective and reminds us of all the good.

Gratitude benefits others when we tell them! Everyone loves to feel appreciated. The more specific we can be, the better.

Even if you aren’t in the US, I suggest you take some time next week to reflect on what you are grateful for professionally.

And if there is someone who comes to mind, make sure to tell them.

Some phrases to help with expressing your gratitude to your colleagues and partners:

🙏I’m so glad you’re on my team.

🙏I’m so grateful / thankful for your support.

🙏I really appreciate that you helped me with X.

🙏Thanks so much for being X.

🙏Thanks so much for helping me with X.

I truly appreciate each of you for reading, for being part of our community, and for all the work you are doing to make our world better. 🌎

Best, Amy

Are you a perfectionist? Or do you know one? As a perfectionist myself, I hate admitting that I'm a perfectionist. Why? Because I know being a perfectionist isn't the best thing to be, so of course, I don't want to be one. Because I'm a perfectionist. Make sense? So why does this matter for your communication skills? Because if we are expecting perfection of ourselves, then we are limiting our progress. We are waiting to have perfect English in the future and not using the English we already...
