Feeling overwhelmed?

Your work isn't easy.

In my coaching, I see a lot of NGO & International Cooperation professionals who feel overwhelmed by the amount of work they have.

It can seem like there is always more to do and not enough time, resources, or energy.

Here’s the definition of overwhelmed, according to the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English (my favorite online dictionary, by the way!)

This word originally related to ships, and the experience of waves crashing over and submerging the ship.

Do you ever feel overwhelmed?

It's pretty normal in this line of work.

That’s why it’s so important to know how to ask for help when you need it and to say NO when you can’t do more.

This can be difficult to express in any language, so here are some helpful phrases that we use in English to clearly communicate our needs.

ASKING FOR HELP

  • Who wants to take the lead on this one?
  • Can anyone else pitch in?
  • Can you take this on?
  • Do you have the capacity for this?
  • Are you able to help me out here?

SAYING I CAN'T DO IT

  • I’ve got a lot going on right now.
  • I’m a little overwhelmed at the moment.
  • I’ve got a lot (or too much) on my plate. 🍽️
  • Is it possible to pass this off to someone else?
  • Can someone else on the team take the lead on this one?

OFFERING THANKS

🙏 Don’t forget to express gratitude when someone agrees to help.

We often state our appreciation as part of the request, before someone agrees to help.

  • I’d really appreciate your help on this.
  • This would be a huge help.
  • I’d be happy to return the favor in the future.
  • Thanks in advance. (usually in writing)

What else can we do when we feel overwhelmed?

Take a vacation! ✈️🏖️🌄

I hope many of you enjoy time off in the next few weeks. Personally, I’m headed to the US and the UK at the end of March to visit family and friends.

I plan to return refreshed and ready to go on April 1. I have two spaces available for new one-on-one clients, starting at the beginning of April.

If you’ve been wanting to work on your presentation skills, feel more confident participating in meetings, or prepare for job applications and interviews, reach out now, so we can get you on the schedule.

I customize each program to meet your needs and goals.

Additionally, there is still room in my group coaching, where we work on many of these skills, while enjoying the small group dynamic.

💪🏼Here's to feeling less overwhelmed and more in control of our work commitments and relationships.

All the best,

Amy
